The Story of My Venus Flytrap Passion

Explore my journey from fascination to a thriving Venus flytrap collection.

About me

My name is Peter Janata, I am 33 year old, and my journey with Venus flytraps began four years ago when I fell in love with my boyfriend, a gardener. He introduced me to the beauty of plants, and soon after, I bought my first typical Venus flytrap at Garden Centre Chládek in Prague. That small plant sparked a passion that quickly grew into a lifelong fascination.

My First Order of Venus Flytraps

As my interest deepened, I started searching for unique cultivars. My first special varieties came from Mrs. and Mr. Srba, well-known growers in the carnivorous plant community. My boyfriend has contacted them to give me a best present for my birthdays. With each new flytrap, my collection expanded, and so did my knowledge and love for these incredible plants.

Growing in Czechia

I originally hail from Bratislava, but Prague captured my heart when I moved here at 23. My fascination with this vibrant city coincided with my passion for Venus flytraps. Picture my apartment: a cozy flat with a balcony where I cultivated these captivating carnivorous plants. One shelf dedicated to them, seedlings glowing on the windowsill under artificial lights — it was a delightful sight!

Escaping the City for Nature

We soon started looking for a house with a big garden for my boyfriend's gardening passion — and found a charming old home. While it underwent renovations, we stayed at his grandma's place. My Venus flytraps moved with us and thrived in a small, cozy greenhouse where my collection quickly began to grow. I'll always cherish those peaceful days surrounded by plants and family warmth.

Moving Into Our Dreamy Farm

After a year of hard work renovating our old house, we finally moved in — just in time to celebrate our first Christmas together in new home. One of the first projects was building a spacious new greenhouse for my growing collection of carnivorous plants. The collection has expanded significantly, and there's still plenty of room for more unique Venus flytrap cultivars.
