Why I Started a Small Venus Flytrap Business

Published on 23.04.2025
You know that moment when your hobby becomes more than just a hobby? That’s what happened to me — and a couple hundred Venus flytraps.
What started as a fascination with these quirky, jaw-snapping plants turned into a full-blown obsession. And eventually... well, a small side business. Not an empire. Not a mega nursery. Just me, a few shelves of lovingly grown Dionaea cultivars, and a mission to share the magic.
Okay, but why sell them?
Because they multiply like tiny green gremlins and they need homes. Also, because people kept asking if they could buy some. So I thought: why not?
It’s not about money. If I wanted to get rich quick, I’d sell trendy digital collectibles, not actual live plants that require love, care, and the right amount of sunlight. This is a passion project — my way of keeping the collection sustainable and spreading the love for carnivorous plants.
Dear nurseries: I’m not your competition ❤️
Let’s be clear. I’m not trying to be the next big player in the carnivorous plant world. I’m just a grower with an Instagram account (@petersflytraps) and a weakness for fancy cultivars.
If you’re a big nursery reading this — relax. I’m cheering for you, not racing against you. I buy plants from you. I admire your work. If anything, I'm the nerdy fan in the background saying, “Wow, look at that seed-grown B52!”
So… are you making tons of money?
Hah. I wish.
Sometimes people from outside the hobby assume that because I have a webshop and ship a few flytraps, I must be laundering cash through carnivores. That couldn't be further from the truth.
This isn't a get-rich scheme — it’s more like a break-even-and-smile scheme. Every sale helps cover soil, pots, lighting, packaging, and the hours I spend gently whispering to my plants (don’t judge).
If you're jealous, come over and repot sphagnum with me for 3 hours. I promise the glamour will fade fast.
I grow flytraps, not egos.
So there you have it. I'm just a guy with a lot of flytraps, a small webshop, and a deep-rooted love for these weird, beautiful plants.
If you’re into them too, welcome. If you're a fellow grower or nursery — I respect you. And if you're just here to figure out whether this is legal… it totally is. Scout’s honor.
Stay snappy 🌱
